Health Care Costs Reduced By California Tobacco Control Program
Tobacco control programs tail reduce smoke, and when successful, they
reduce personal health forethought costs, according to a study released on
August 25, 2008 in the open-access journal PLoS Medicine.
The work specifically tracks the California Tobacco Control Program,
which was established in 1989 with the goal of changing social norms
surrounding tobacco use. Rather than focusing on adolescents, the
program targeted adult users, with the thought that change in young people
john be enabled by changes in the actions of their use models.
Though much has been postulated regarding the potential economic
effects of large-scale baccy programs, Stanton Glantz and colleagues
at the University of California San Francisco hoped to perform an
analysis to ascertain the actual human relationship. In their analysis, they
noted that the factors involved in health care expenditures may
fluctuate for many reasons that ar not related to patient habits, such
as changes in medical technology or demographic shifts. They used
regression analysis to minimise many of these personal effects to find out the
effects of the tobacco control program unequaled on health care
expenditures.
In California, 3.6 billion fewer packs of cigarettes were sold during
the 5 year row of the program. The tobacco industriousness did not gain and
estimated $9.2 one thousand million U.S. in pre-tax cigarette sales as a solution of
this.
Data in California was compared to a set of controls, the latter with
either no comprehensive tobacco control condition program earlier 2000 or
cigarette tax increases of $0.50 or more per load down over the period of
the study. Between 1989, when the program started, and 2004, there was
a nest egg of $86 billion U.S. in personal health forethought expenditure.
These nest egg in price grew, peaking at 7.3% in 2003-2004. Altogether,
this represents a 50-fold riposte on the $1.8 billion U.S. that were
invested in the program over this period.
The researchers item out that these economic indicators are of
significance, especially when comparing the money invested in tobacco
control programs with the large settlements and tobacco plant taxes
collected. In this study lies the number 1 evidence that tobacco control
programs actually reduce health care costs -- this only further
justifies the implementation of such programs.
According to a report of the Global Tobacco Epidemic in 2008 by the
W.H.O., all key tobacco plant control measures have not been implemented in
whatever given country. It to boot states that around the world, the
money gathered in baccy taxes each year is nearly D times the
money exhausted on tobacco control measures.
Effect of the California Tobacco Control Program on personal
health care expenditures.

Fight Club: Lily Allen v Perez Hilton
Basically, it seems that the daughter of Keith has fallen out with the son of Paris over whether she knew the true identity of Katy Perry, the singer of popular hit UR So Gay, and for how long she has known this.
All of this would seem rather inconsequential to the rest of us, but Perez, who has been championing Perry for the best part of a year, has used a minor discrepancy to launch a number of pithy and, indeed, petty assaults on the girl everyone loved in 2006 but now, not so much.
You can read the whole thing either on Perez's blog or Lily's MySpace journal and, seeing as it's so convoluted and catty, we might just leave you to do that. As an example of what you can expect, however, here's an excerpt from Perez, taking issue with Lily's ignorance of the whereabouts of the offices of Capitol records:
"You're obviously an idiot!
"How could you not know that your US label, Capitol Records, has an office in Los Angeles????
"In fact, their building is one of the most iconic structures in Hollywood!
"Did we also mention that you're a liar?"
Sterling stuff. It makes you proud to be an internet scribbler, that's for sure.
Middle-aged behaviour alert: Smart Gordon reports in this morning's Bizarre that ex-Formula 1 baron Eddie Jordan is to attend this weekend's Isle of Wight festival. And, of course, he plans to do it in an unnecessarily lavish fashion. Says Smarto: "He will arrive at the Isle of Wight festival aboard a multi-million-pound Sunseeker yacht full of playboy racing drivers and glamorous girls.
"The Irishman's band Eddie Jordan and the Robbers, in which he drums, will play the Seaclose Park bash at the weekend."
In the News will not be at Seaclose Park this weekend, but does hope that this sparks a new trend for fat cats playing festivals. Donald and the Trumps? Stuart Rose and the Thorns? Richard Branson and the Pickles? Bring 'em all on.

Dough! "Simpsons" cast gets a hefty raise
After months of negotiations, the cast of Fox's long-running animated series reached a new four-year deal with the studio during the weekend.
Under the pact, the top actors will be paid nearly $400,000 per episode. While this is lower than the reported $500,000 the cast originally sought, it remains a significant increase from their current paychecks of about $300,000 an episode. (By contrast, Charlie Sheen is the highest-paid sitcom star, reportedly earning $350,000 per episode in 2006.)
Additionally, Dan Castellaneta, who voices Homer Simpson and has penned several "Simpsons" episodes over the years, is being named a consulting producer.
Castellaneta and most of the other key "Simpsons" voice players -- Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), Yeardley Smith (Lisa) and Hank Azaria (Moe) -- are slated to begin work on the upcoming 20th season Tuesday.
As of Monday, the status of Harry Shearer, who voices Mr. Burns and Ned Flanders, among other characters, was unclear. Because of a last-minute snag, his deal did not close with the other cast members', and it was not clear if he would show up for work on Tuesday.
As a result of the drawn-out contract negotiations, the upcoming season of "The Simpsons" has been reduced by two episodes to 20. While the deal makes the voice cast available for four more seasons, Fox has yet to order the animated comedy beyond season No. 20.
The "Simpsons" cast and 20th TV have been down this road before. Most recently in 2004, the actors held up production of the 16th season by skipping two table reads during negotiations. They ended up more than doubling their previous salary.

Under the Same Moon - movie review
"Somewhere Out There," the maudlin theme song to Disney's animated An American Tail,
is audio torture. It's not just Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram's warbling. It's
the heavy-handed longing -- important to the song -- that is betrayed by bogus lyrics
like "And even though I know how very far apart we are / It helps to think we might
be wishing on the same bright star."
Patricia Riggen's Under the Same Moon takes the song's phony concept even further. It
swipes the faux sentimentality of "Somewhere" and duct tapes it to our nation's very
real border-crossing dilemma. It pretends to address a serious issue but ends up
degrading an entire race.
The sad sacks sleeping under Riggen's moon are nine-year-old Carlos (Adrian Alonso)
and his beloved mother, Rosario (Kate del Castillo). She's an illegal immigrant cleaning
houses in Los Angeles. He's a virtual orphan in Mexico caring for a sickly grandmother and
fending off his greedy uncle. When granny kicks the bucket, Carlos finally sets out
to cross the border and join mom in the City of Angels.
The child's obstacles amount to a string of poorly-written, obvious clichs that
litter the road many travel from Mexico City to the southern United States. Screenwriter
Ligiah Villalobos peppers Carlos with broadly drawn, grotesque (and, of course, non-M
exican) villains. Later she recruits Ugly Betty star America Ferrera for a ham-fisted
confrontation at a border checkpoint. Why is it people smuggling immigrants into
our country always are told they can proceed, only to be stopped seconds before crossing
safely for a broken taillight or an expired registration?
Moon tells a glossy version of immigration, where surly (but kindhearted) vagabonds
shepherd scared children to their mother's waiting arms. Moon is so safe it's dull,
so predictable it's toothless, and so corny it's insulting.
Aka La Misma luna.

At the time of their 1990 debut, the genial of stone & wheel the Black Crowes specialise in was out of style. It entered the charts at phone phone number unity, but it didn't take as many hit singles as the debut; none of the singles loco the Top 40 and only "Remediation" and "Thorn in My Pridefulness" made the Whirligig 100. Notwithstanding, the band naturalized itself as a toss off concert attracter that summer, marketing out theaters across America. During 1992, the band added keyboardist Eddie Harsch as a perm member.
